This print is created using complex plotting software that creates the swell charts you see on Swellcloud.  The software reads a GRIB (Gridded Binary) file a concise data format commonly used in meteorology to store and transport historical and forecast meteorological data and turns it into human interpretable plots which we then animate together.

This print plots ‘Hercules’ the storm that affected the European western coast during early January 2014 causing considerable coastal damage.

Waves were recorded as high as 27ft at Land’s End & The Environment Agency issued 340 flood warnings which covered all parts of the country including three severe alerts – meaning where there was a “significant risk to life”

PRESS LINK – UK weather: Rain and flood warnings extended after ‘Winter Storm Hercules’ brings 27ft waves to Land’s End and flood sirens in Dorset
